Synopsis

Our hero, Cooper, awakes to find himself nauseous, weak and covered in webbing, hanging from the ceiling of an office where, just minutes ago, he started his new job. As he struggles out of his slimy prison he comes face to face with his opponent - a grotesque, powerful and very angry bug. All 3 ft of it. And so begins a hideous, nail-biting, comedic, all-action adventure to find a safe haven while constantly outwitting an infestation of monstrous proportions. As Cooper embarks on his journey, he befriends a ragtag group of survivors including the feisty, determined Sara. Will they make it to safety before they are picked off one by one? And what other surprises are in store for our group of unlikely heroes?

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.8/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks prominent LGBTQ+ characters or storylines. It adheres to a traditional heteronormative framework, focusing on the biological threat rather than identity-based social dynamics.

Gender Representation

Fair

The ensemble follows standard genre conventions without disrupting traditional gender hierarchies. Character dynamics are driven by survival, resulting in a neutral portrayal of gender roles.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The cast is predominantly homogeneous, centering on a largely white, middle-class demographic. There is a notable absence of intersectional casting or diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative operates within a secular, consumerist framework typical of modern horror-comedies. It focuses on individual survival rather than a critique of religious or capitalist structures.

Disability Representation

Limited

Characters are defined by their physical capacity to survive the infestation. There is no significant evidence of characters with visible or invisible disabilities being afforded agency.

Strengths

  • Successfully employs postmodern parody to deconstruct classic horror clichés.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks intersectional casting and diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Fails to engage with non-cisnormative identities or LGBTQ+ storylines.
  • Does not provide meaningful representation for characters with disabilities.
  • Maintains traditional gender hierarchies rather than subverting them.

AI Analysis

Infestation functions primarily as a postmodern parody of creature-feature tropes, prioritizing stylistic absurdity and survivalist chaos. While it successfully deconstructs horror clichés, it does not extend this deconstruction to systemic social hierarchies. The film maintains a conservative representational profile, focusing on the immediate crisis rather than progressive social commentary. The narrative architecture favors genre-specific tropes over intersectional depth.
