Who Is Bernard Tapie? is a psychological character study that emphasizes subjective experience over objective journalism. It succeeds in breaking down the 'great man' myth by highlighting the filmmaker's own active role and the instability of institutional power. However, the film's scope is limited. It remains deeply rooted in a Eurocentric, socio-economic context, which restricts its breadth regarding racial and LGBTQ+ representation. The narrative's strength lies in its complexity rather than its demographic diversity. Ultimately, the documentary serves as a study of systemic dysfunction and personal obsession, offering a nuanced look at power without a wide range of perspectives that reflect multiple aspects of identity.
Category Breakdown
The film delves into Tapie's complex interpersonal relationships and social circles. Though it doesn't center on LGBTQ+ identities or explicit same-sex intimacy, it hints at a move away from strict, traditional family structures.
Zenovich challenges the typical, male-dominated documentary style by positioning herself as an active, obsessive force. The narrative also looks at power dynamics that disrupt traditional masculine stability through Tapie's volatility.
The documentary centers on a specific Eurocentric world of French high society and politics. It does not show a non-white majority cast or explore multi-layered racial dynamics.
The film offers a sharp critique of Western institutions by examining the volatility of French politics and capitalism. It presents a complex study of systemic corruption and moral relativism.
The narrative focuses on psychological obsession and social maneuvering. There is no clear indication of the portrayal of physical or neurodivergent disabilities.

Official Synopsis
This documentary tells two stories simultaneously: it's a profile of Bernard Tapie, a wealthy man who rises and falls spectacularly in French society and may be on the rise again; and, it's a look at Marina Zenovich's fascination with Tapie, behaving oddly in spite of her awareness that she's being irrational. Politicians, athletes, friends, companions, and journalists comment on Bernard's charm, his rise to prominence in sports and politics, and his subsequent trouble with the law. Zenovich becomes fixated on her need to interview Tapie, becoming virtually a stalker in her quest.
