Synopsis

Merchant Marine sailors Joe Rossi (Humphrey Bogart) and Steve Jarvis (Raymond Massey) are charged with getting a supply vessel to Russian allies as part of a sea convoy. When the group of ships comes under attack from a German U-boat, Rossi and Jarvis navigate through dangerous waters to evade Nazi naval forces. Though their mission across the Atlantic is extremely treacherous, they are motivated by the opportunity to strike back at the Germans, who sank one of their earlier ships.

AI Analysis

Action in the North Atlantic serves as a quintessential example of 1940s wartime cinema, designed to bolster morale through traditionalist storytelling. The film prioritizes collective national identity and duty over individual or marginalized perspectives. The narrative reinforces existing social hierarchies by centering a homogeneous, male-dominated crew. It functions as a cohesive piece of propaganda that adheres strictly to the demographic norms of its era. While the film succeeds in its genre-driven mission of portraying Allied resilience, it lacks any intersectional depth or social subversion.
