Lea and Darija is a historical drama that shifts the focus of World War II away from traditional combat to the intersection of celebrity and ethnic identity. By centering on two young female stars, the film highlights how political instability affects personal ability to act and social standing. The narrative effectively uses the historical context of Nazi persecution to explore racialized violence and the fragility of social structures. While the film excels in gendered storytelling and ethnic history, it lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or disability.

Official Synopsis
It’s inspiring true story about two thirteen-year-old girls who were, on the eve of World War II, great dancing and acting stars in Zagreb. Selling out theatre venues, they were praised in the most superb headlines by the Croatian and European press. They were filmed by Parisian Pathe and Berlin’s UFA… During the Nazi persecution of Jews and the later German nationals’ flight from communists, a dramatic friendship was born through entertainment, dance, but also anxiety. This led towards an unexpected end.
