Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks visible LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. Dynamics center on heteronormative family structures and traditional gendered roles without critiquing these norms.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story centers on female protagonists, with agency driven by young girls and their mothers. While passing the Bechdel test, characters largely inhabit traditional emotional roles.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast features a degree of ethnic diversity compared to legacy horror franchises. However, race is incidental to the plot rather than a tool for deconstructing hierarchies.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative is deeply rooted in Western religious institutions, specifically the Catholic Church. It reinforces religious ritual and authority as the primary means of resolving conflict.

Disability Representation

Limited

Psychological trauma and altered consciousness are used as symptoms of possession. These elements serve as horror plot devices rather than authentic depictions of neurodivergence or disability.

Strengths

  • The film provides meaningful representation by centering its narrative on female protagonists.
  • The story successfully passes the Bechdel test through the dialogue of girls and mothers.
  • The cast features a degree of ethnic diversity compared to legacy horror films.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks visible LGBTQ+ characters or engagement with non-cisnormative identities.
  • Characters often operate within traditional emotional roles, limiting the subversion of gender hierarchies.
  • Altered states of consciousness are used as plot devices rather than authentic disability representation.

AI Analysis

The Exorcist: Believer functions as a traditional genre piece that prioritizes established religious horror tropes over social subversion. While it moves away from the homogeneous casting of older franchises, it remains a conservative narrative construction. The film succeeds in providing female-led agency and moderate ethnic variety. However, it lacks the intentionality needed to challenge systemic hierarchies or offer a critique of Western cultural norms. Ultimately, the film operates within a framework that views traditional spiritual structures as the essential defense against chaos, reinforcing rather than questioning existing social and religious orders.
