Raising Cain is a psychological character study that prioritizes thematic subversion over demographic variety. It challenges the stability of traditional institutions like the family and religious morality by presenting them as sources of instability. However, the film maintains a traditional cast that lacks significant racial or LGBTQ+ representation, limiting its social diversity. Ultimately, the work is more philosophically progressive than socially diverse, using psychological trauma to critique the stability of Western social structures.
