4th and Goal is a longitudinal character study that finds its strength in the lived experiences of its diverse protagonists. By following six young men over six years, the film moves beyond including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth to provide deep, meaningful representation of racial and social identity within the football subculture. However, the film remains tethered to traditional social frameworks. The hyper-masculine setting of the NFL and collegiate athletics limits the scope of gender and LGBTQ+ representation, focusing almost exclusively on masculine archetypes of competition and brotherhood. Ultimately, the documentary succeeds as an observational piece that gives real power to its subjects. While it does not deconstruct institutional hierarchies, it provides a platform for nuanced storytelling regarding the intersection of race and personal struggle.
