Waiting for the Sun shifts the focus from individual crime to the intergenerational collateral damage of capital punishment. By centering on the children of death row inmates, the film deconstructs the 'criminal' label and examines the systemic impact on families. The documentary excels at providing a non-Western perspective, moving away from moralistic depictions of crime to explore complex socio-political realities. It uses the figure of Grandma Zhang to anchor a narrative about grassroots responses to institutional failure. While the film offers deep sociological insight, it lacks specific engagement with identity-based themes like LGBTQ+ representation or explicit gender-focused storytelling, remaining primarily concerned with systemic social structures.
