Imam Hasan, his wife Hacer and his daughter Fatma arrive at Karaağaçlı, a small railway town in the middle of the Anatolian wilderness. Besides carrying out the duties of the imam, Hasan will be teaching religion to the children of the town during the holy month of Ramadan. His unusual behavior towards his wife and little daughter arrests the attention of the townsfolk. Meanwhile Adem, the son of the stationmaster who is crazy for trains begins to learn about and get into a world he has never heard of before in the lessons given by Hasan: trains, sin, good deeds, heaven and hell.. everything gets jumbled. Condemned of being harsh and merciless towards his family, Hasan one day finds himself obliged to reveal the "secret" about himself and his family and this changes everything in the eyes of people. Yet there has remained another secret of which anyone, even Hasan is hardly aware. The people of the town, including Adem, will remember this Ramadan throughout their lives.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film explores deviations from social norms through Imam Hasan's unusual behavior toward his family. While it lacks explicit non-cisnormative identities, the narrative subtext suggests a disruption of heteronormative domestic expectations.
Gender Representation
Hasan's harsh and merciless nature critiques the idealized religious patriarch. By centering a domestic 'secret,' the film challenges traditional patriarchal hierarchies and presents a more fractured, complex version of masculinity.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Set in the Anatolian wilderness, the film focuses on a specific Turkish regional community. It avoids a homogeneous norm through its localized setting but lacks broader intersectional blending.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The story effectively deconstructs religious authority by juxtaposing sacred lessons with the secular world of trains. This creates a nuanced morality that challenges the perceived infallibility of religious institutions.
Disability Representation
Adem’s obsessive focus on trains suggests neurodivergent traits. Rather than treating this as a deficit, the film uses his unique perspective as a lens to reinterpret the world.

AI Analysis
Barış Pirhasan’s drama succeeds by deconstructing traditional authority figures. By presenting an Imam whose domestic life is defined by secrets and harshness, the film moves away from religious archetypes toward psychological realism. The film also finds strength in its characterization of Adem. His singular, obsessive interest in trains provides a unique perspective that drives the narrative, offering a respectful portrayal of neurodivergent-coded behavior. While the film excels at cultural critique and subverting patriarchal norms, it remains limited by its specific regional focus and a lack of explicit LGBTQ+ identities.
