La scelta di Maria is a commemorative documentary that uses archival footage and animation to honor the centennial of Italy's Unknown Soldier. Because the film is a collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, its narrative structure is built around nationalistic themes and state-sanctioned history. The film's focus on military martyrdom and national symbols inherently reinforces traditional social hierarchies. It prioritizes the preservation of collective memory and institutional continuity over exploring diverse or underrepresented identities. While the multi-modal approach offers a sophisticated way to reconstruct the past, the subject matter remains rooted in the demographic and social norms of 1921 Italy.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the 'Unknown Soldier,' a symbol of traditional military martyrdom. There is no depiction of non-straight identities or narratives that question the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender.
The narrative centers on masculine archetypes of combat and state service. While the title suggests a female perspective, the documentary appears to prioritize male-dominated military history.
The story reflects the demographic homogeneity of early 20th-century Italy. The focus on domestic heritage prioritizes Mediterranean-European identities over perspectives that consider multiple aspects of diversity.
The film honors national institutions and patriotism through state-sanctioned storytelling. It aligns with the preservation of traditional Western values rather than offering a critique.
There is no mention of characters navigating physical or neurodivergent disabilities. Any representation of disability would likely be related to wartime injuries rather than a central theme.
