André Téchiné’s work stands out for its nuanced portrayal of identity, particularly through the lens of sexual and gender fluidity. By avoiding rigid categories and assumptions about straight relationships, the film offers a fresh perspective on human desire and female autonomy. However, the film’s narrow demographic focus limits its reach. The absence of racial and disability representation means the narrative stays within a homogeneous European context. Overall, the film is a deep dive into psychological complexity. It successfully breaks down traditional social hierarchies and romantic clichés, even though it doesn’t fully represent a wide range of human experiences.
