New Showbiz Analysis

Bury Your Dead is a genre-bending horror film that stands out by avoiding Western narrative norms. Set in rural Brazil, it offers a unique Global South perspective that challenges mainstream cinema's homogeneity. The film excels at subverting traditional power structures. It replaces the stable, heroic male lead with a chaotic figure and elevates the female lead to a position of systemic ability to act. Additionally, the critique of religious institutions adds a layer of sophisticated social commentary. However, the film's commitment to identity is somewhat obscured by its focus on genre clichés. While the characters exist on the fringes of society, the specificities of their identities—particularly regarding LGBTQ+ status and disability—remain largely unconfirmed or ambiguous.
