Strays functions as a subversion of the wholesome pet comedy, using anthropomorphized animals to mirror human social dysfunction. It replaces themes of domestic loyalty with stories of systemic betrayal and toxic relationships. While the film lacks traditional demographic diversity, it finds strength in its cultural critique. However, the reliance on a male-centric ensemble and the absence of human the way different parts of someone's identity overlap limit its broader representational reach. The focus remains narrow, prioritizing raunchy humor over complex social exploration.
