New Showbiz Analysis

Naked Complex is a product of its era, functioning as a mid-century commercial comedy that relies heavily on established genre clichés. The narrative structure prioritizes escapism and voyeurism over any meaningful social commentary or layered representation. The film adheres to traditional hierarchies, centering the story on a male protagonist's struggle with intimacy. While it offers a minor comedic subversion of masculine competence through the male lead's 'malady,' this is framed through a comedic lens rather than a progressive one. Ultimately, the work lacks intentional subversion of social norms. It remains a period-specific piece that follows homogeneous and straight-centered casting patterns common to 1960s sex comedies.

Official Synopsis

Johnny is an expert at judo, water skiing, golf, tennis, scuba diving, and racing cars, but is a helpless flop around women. One night, in an effort to cure him, his doctor takes him to a nightclub to get him used to being around attractive women. Johnny faints and is humiliated by the newspapers revealing his "malady" and runs away, flying his plane to a remote part of the ocean where he crashes on a island of nude women. At first, Johnny is afraid to look at the naked women...but soon they have him considering the lure of nudity as well.
