A Haunted House centers its narrative on the domestic lives of a Black couple, Malcolm and Kisha. This approach offers a moderate level of inclusion by shifting away from the typical homogeneous casting in horror films. While the film disrupts some clichés by focusing on interpersonal dynamics rather than just external threats, it does not offer deep, layered character development. The representation leans more towards relatable domestic scenarios than a radical critique of broader societal issues. Ultimately, the film provides a necessary shift in protagonist identity but remains tied to traditional romantic and social frameworks.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on a heterosexual relationship between Malcolm and Kisha. There is no representation of non-cisgender identities or narratives that challenge the assumption that everyone is straight.
The story shifts power dynamics as the male protagonist deals with a crisis caused by the female protagonist's possession. However, it does not deeply challenge traditional ideas about masculinity.
The central protagonists are a Black couple. By highlighting their domestic life and ability to act, the film moves away from the typical homogeneous casting in horror films.
The story uses satire to address institutions like the church and psychic services. While it questions religious authority, the main conflict stays within conventional social structures.
The concept of possession is framed as a supernatural horror cliché. It does not delve into disability or neurodivergence through character-driven stories.
