Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks prominent LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The romantic core focuses entirely on a heterosexual partnership without exploring non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

Gender roles serve primarily as vehicles for slapstick comedy. While the female lead shows domestic agency, the film relies on conventional gendered conflicts for humor.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The film centers a Black lead in a genre that historically favors white protagonists. This placement disrupts suburban horror tropes by centering Black domesticity.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

Engagement with cultural and religious institutions is superficial. It treats exorcisms and demons through absurdity rather than offering a deep critique of organized religion.

Disability Representation

Limited

There is no significant or nuanced portrayal of visible or invisible disabilities. The narrative focus remains strictly on the comedic paranormal interactions.

Strengths

  • Centers a Black protagonist in a genre that traditionally lacks such representation.
  • Subverts suburban horror tropes by focusing on Black domesticity and agency.
  • Avoids reinforcing traditional hierarchies of masculine competence through comedic vulnerability.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks meaningful representation of LGBTQ+ identities or queer narratives.
  • Provides no nuanced or significant portrayals of characters with disabilities.
  • Relies on superficial treatments of cultural and religious institutions for parody.

AI Analysis

A Haunted House 2 succeeds in subverting horror genre norms by placing a Black family at the center of a suburban haunting. This provides a refreshing shift from the typical white-centric protagonists found in supernatural films. However, the film's impact is limited by its reliance on slapstick and broad comedic archetypes. It prioritizes parody over meaningful engagement with intersectional identities or systemic social critiques. Ultimately, while the racial representation is strong, the lack of diversity in other areas like LGBTQ+ and disability representation keeps the overall score in a moderate range.
