New Showbiz Analysis

My Father My Lord is a psychological study of the tension between personal freedom and institutional doctrine. It examines the tragic consequences of religious fervor within a traditional family structure. The film's strength lies in its portrayal of the female protagonist's journey from passivity to defiance, which directly critiques patriarchal religious authority. However, the film lacks broader diversity. It operates within a narrow cultural framework, offering limited representation for LGBTQ+ identities and broader racial diversity beyond its specific religious setting.

Official Synopsis

"My Father My Lord" is an intimate and deeply disturbing story of the conflict between a father's love and his deep devotion to religion. A respected Orthodox Rabbi dotes on his only son but his religious strictures leave an emotional gap between the impish child and the stern father. When the father's all-consuming obsession with observing religious ritual inadvertently leads to tragedy, his previously subservient wife rages against both her husband and God. A dramatic retelling of the story of Abraham.
