Devoutly religious Ruth returns from Israel to care for her dying mother, but when she tries to bring her estranged brother David back into the fold, in accordance with her mother's wishes, the result is a startling journey into the darkest realms of sexual obsession: a forbidden game under the guise of religious law. Dark, ambiguous and distinctly adult, this study of belief and desire, set in the cloistered world of London's Orthodox Jewish community, thoughtfully explores the links between faith and violence, denial and longing.

Song of Songs is a psychological study of the friction between religious dogma and individual impulse. It succeeds in deconstructing the sanctity of traditional institutions by framing them as sites of tension and repressed agency. The film provides a sophisticated critique of how social hierarchies shape human behavior. It avoids modern identity-based tropes in favor of a deeper interrogation of belief and desire. While the film offers a specialized cultural perspective, it remains focused on a specific, insular community. This focus provides depth but limits the breadth of its representation.
