LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any documented evidence of non-cisnormative identities or same-sex intimacy. It adheres to traditional horror archetypes without exploring queer themes.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story centers on a female protagonist and a trio of young women. While these characters drive the plot, the film stays within standard genre expectations.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Set in Thailand, the film misses opportunities for nuanced cross-cultural exploration. The narrative prioritizes supernatural tension over ethnic identity or racial depth.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The film operates within a standard moral framework typical of mid-budget horror. It lacks critiques of Western institutions or complex cultural relativism.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no evidence of neurodivergent representation or characters with visible or invisible disabilities. Disability is not used as a narrative device.

Strengths

  • The film provides a platform for female-led storytelling by centering the narrative on a female protagonist and group of female leads.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative lacks intersectional depth and fails to utilize its Thai setting for nuanced cultural or racial exploration.
  • There is a notable absence of LGBTQ+ representation and disability representation within the character archetypes.

AI Analysis

Pernicious is a conventional supernatural horror film that prioritizes atmospheric dread over social commentary. While it provides a platform for female-led storytelling, the narrative remains tethered to established genre tropes. The film's setting in Thailand offers potential for cultural depth, yet the story focuses almost exclusively on the mechanics of a vengeful spirit. This approach results in a localized experience of fear rather than a broader exploration of identity. Ultimately, the film functions as a character-driven piece for women but lacks the intentionality needed to challenge systemic hierarchies or provide meaningful intersectional representation.
