Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film centers on a bachelorette party, a setting rooted in heteronormative social rituals. There is no explicit evidence of non-cisnormative identities or narratives that critique these traditional structures.

Gender Representation

Fair

A female-centric ensemble provides a platform for female agency. However, the slasher framework relies on survivalist archetypes and the 'final girl' trope, which can reinforce traditional gendered vulnerabilities.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Despite the Spanish setting, the narrative follows Western social structures. The focus on a specific group of women suggests a potentially homogeneous cast typical of early 2010s horror.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story operates within a standard Western framework of leisure and celebration. It lacks any critique of Western or secularist norms, focusing instead on individual survival.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The narrative does not feature characters with visible or invisible disabilities. No information is available to assess representation in this category.

Strengths

  • The female-centric ensemble provides a platform for female agency and character-driven action.
  • The setting offers a localized, high-stakes environment for character development during the survival struggle.

Areas for Improvement

  • The reliance on the 'final girl' trope reinforces traditional gendered vulnerabilities.
  • The narrative lacks racial and cultural diversity, following a homogeneous Western social structure.
  • The film fails to engage with or critique heteronormative social rituals or systemic hierarchies.

AI Analysis

Deranged functions as a conventional horror piece that adheres to established genre tropes rather than attempting to disrupt social hierarchies. While the female-led ensemble offers some agency, the film remains tethered to traditional power dynamics and survivalist archetypes. The narrative architecture lacks intersectional depth, focusing on a localized conflict within a Western social framework. It prioritizes visceral tension over complex social commentary or the subversion of systemic norms. Ultimately, the film follows a predictable path for the slasher genre, offering little in the way of cultural or identity-based exploration.
