In the winter of 2011, after a controversial election, Vladimir Putin was reinstalled as president of Russia. In response, hundreds of thousands of citizens rose up all over the country to challenge the legitimacy of Putin’s rule. Among them were a group of young, radical-feminist punk rockers, better known as Pussy Riot. Wearing colored balaclavas, tights, and summer dresses, they entered Moscow’s most venerated cathedral and dared to sing “Mother Mary, Banish Putin!” Now they have become victims of a “show” trial.

AI Analysis
The documentary excels in its portrayal of gendered agency, positioning women as active disruptors of patriarchal institutions. It provides a sophisticated critique of how state and religious powers enforce social norms. However, the film's scope is geographically and ethnically narrow. The focus on a specific Russian political struggle limits its racial and ethnic breadth compared to more intersectional works. While it lacks explicit LGBTQ+ character arcs, the film's core theme of non-conformity provides a meaningful subtext for queer resistance against monolithic authority.
