WWE Survivor Series 1988 is a product of its time, emphasizing hyper-masculine archetypes and a strict moral framework. The event centers on the binary conflict between 'Face' heroes and 'Heel' villains, reinforcing traditional social hierarchies without questioning them. While the roster includes diverse racial characters, they often fit within established 1980s ethnic stereotypes. The broadcast lacks women's ability to drive the story and any meaningful representation of LGBTQ+ identities or disabilities, focusing solely on able-bodied male competition. Ultimately, the broadcast upholds conventional narrative norms. It presents a spectacle of physical dominance without challenging systemic power dynamics or exploring diverse identities.
Category Breakdown
The broadcast does not feature any visible LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The presentation sticks to traditional masculine roles without any hints of queer relationships or challenges to straight relationships.
The narrative focuses almost entirely on male dominance and physicality. There is a lack of female characters taking significant actions or playing key roles in the competition.
The roster includes significant racial diversity through characters like Akeem and The Big Boss Man. However, these characters are portrayed using 1980s ethnic stereotypes rather than being developed with depth and complexity.
The event is built around a simple good versus evil storyline. It upholds traditional Western values and structures of authority through organized athletic competition.
There is no visible representation of physical, sensory, or neurodivergent disabilities. The focus remains entirely on able-bodied physical performance.
