Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.1/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. The narrative remains strictly focused on the paranormal investigation.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story features an investigative team, but the gender composition and power dynamics are not specified. This results in a neutral baseline for ensemble representation.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The setting suggests a localized American horror context. There is no indication of a non-white majority cast or intentional race-bent casting within the ensemble.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The film explores existential questions regarding mortality and the afterlife. However, it does not explicitly critique Western institutions or cultural norms.

Disability Representation

Limited

While the sanatorium setting is historically linked to medical care, the plot focuses on supernatural activity rather than the lived experiences of people with disabilities.

Strengths

  • Engages with universal existential themes regarding mortality and the afterlife.
  • Utilizes a classic horror setting that provides a strong atmospheric foundation.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks intentionality regarding the representation of diverse social identities.
  • Does not utilize the sanatorium setting to explore disability or medical history.
  • Fails to provide specific character agency beyond the investigative premise.

AI Analysis

Sanatorium operates as a traditional genre piece, prioritizing atmospheric tension and the mechanics of a paranormal investigation over social identity. The narrative architecture is built around the mystery of the Hillcrest Sanatorium and the disappearance of team members. Because the film centers on the visceral experience of a haunted setting, it lacks the intentionality required for intersectional representation. It adheres to standard horror tropes rather than deconstructing social hierarchies or identity politics. Ultimately, the film's focus on the supernatural leaves little room for diverse social or systemic critiques, resulting in a score that reflects a standard, homogeneous genre approach.
