The Return is a suspense-driven film that prioritizes plot mechanics over identity-based narratives. It adheres to the conventional cinematic structures of the early 1980s, focusing on an extraterrestrial threat rather than social issues. The film relies heavily on standard, non-challenging clichés. It presents a demographic landscape reflecting the era's typical small-town homogeneity, offering little in the way of diverse character development.
