Blind succeeds in centering a physical disability as a core narrative element rather than a mere jump-scare device. By focusing on Faye's lived experience with vision loss, the film grants her a unique form of ability to act within the thriller framework. However, the film remains tethered to traditional genre clichés. It relies on conventional gendered power dynamics and heterosexual relationships, which limits its ability to challenge social hierarchies. Ultimately, the lack of racial diversity and depth in representing multiple aspects of identity keeps the film within a narrow, homogeneous social scope. It functions effectively as a genre piece but lacks broader cultural engagement.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any identifiable LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The central romantic tension follows a traditional relationship between Faye and Luke.
While the story centers on a female protagonist, Faye's arc often adheres to the 'final girl' horror cliché. Male characters occupy conventional roles as romantic interests or antagonists.
The film appears to lack significant racial diversity in its primary cast. The Hollywood Hills setting suggests a narrative focused on a relatively homogeneous social stratum.
The narrative functions as a standard psychological thriller rather than a sociological critique. It prioritizes individual survival and paranoia over broader cultural or systemic themes.
The film provides a meaningful focus on visual impairment caused by medical malpractice. Faye's disability drives her character arc and serves as the primary source of tension.
