Zhang Yimou’s drama emphasizes the humanistic, subjective experience over rigid state-imposed structures. Despite lacking modern identity-based clichés, the film finds progressive value in its deconstruction of individual versus collective dynamics. It serves as a cautionary tale about the erosion of personal identity due to collective dogma. The film excels in its poetic realism and its ability to navigate complex socio-political landscapes. By highlighting the emotional intelligence of its female lead, it disrupts traditional hierarchies and avoids relying solely on male-driven action. However, the film adheres to a traditional romantic framework and does not represent LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities.
