Synopsis

For over fifty years, legendary designer Dieter Rams has left an indelible mark on the field of product design with his iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe, and his influence on Apple. So at 86 years old, why does he now regret being a designer? This is a design documentary, but it’s also a rumination on consumerism, materialism, and sustainability. Dieter's philosophy is about more than just design, it’s about a way to live.

AI Analysis

Rams is a philosophical inquiry into material culture rather than a study of demographic variety. Its primary strength lies in its cultural critique, specifically how it interrogates capitalist consumption patterns and promotes intentional living. However, the film's biographical focus on a specific German designer results in a homogeneous visual and narrative landscape. This limits the representation of racial, ethnic, and LGBTQ+ identities. Ultimately, the documentary trades demographic breadth for depth in systemic critique, offering a high-level deconstruction of modern consumerist values through the lens of industrial design.
