New Showbiz Analysis

David Lowery’s version of the Peter Pan story updates the main characters and shifts the narrative focus. By emphasizing Wendy’s intellectual and emotional growth, the film challenges the traditional 'boy adventurer' cliché and gives the female lead more influence. The production works to diversify a story that was previously very uniform. Expanding Tiger Lily’s role moves the setting away from its original Anglo-centric roots, making Neverland more inclusive. While the film does well with gender and racial representation, it stays traditional regarding LGBTQ+ identities and disability. It makes structural changes but doesn’t delve into specific queer or neurodivergent stories.
