Ben Singer is a failed children's folk singer, a career proofreader, a less-than-extraordinary weekend dad, and perhaps the most negative man alive. Floundering in all aspects of his life, Ben's only comfort comes from regular chess games and friendly debates on game theory with his Senegalese roommate Ibou. When Ibou is suddenly struck ill, Ben's pessimistic worldview seems unequivocally confirmed. It takes an extended visit from Ibou's sister Khadi for Ben to realize that cynicism may be all a matter of perspective.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film centers on platonic and familial bonds rather than romantic ones. It avoids traditional heteronormative tropes by focusing on male friendship and cross-cultural connections.
Gender Representation
Ben Singer subverts the competent patriarch trope by being an emotionally floundering, failed professional. Female characters like Khadi act as essential catalysts for emotional growth and perspective shifts.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
Meaningful inclusion is found in the central relationship between Ben and his Senegalese roommate, Ibou. This domestic intimacy moves beyond tokenism to drive the protagonist's development.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The narrative challenges Western-centric, hyper-individualistic pessimism. It emphasizes communal and familial ties through Ibou and Khadi, favoring an interconnected emotional framework over isolated self-reliance.
Disability Representation
There is no specific evidence regarding the portrayal of physical or neurodivergent disabilities. Ibou's illness serves primarily as a plot catalyst.

AI Analysis
Wonderful World succeeds in deconstructing traditional masculine archetypes. By presenting a protagonist who lacks stability and professional success, the film moves away from the standard 'heroic' male lead. This creates space for more nuanced character studies. The film's strongest asset is its integration of Senegalese heritage into the core emotional arc. The relationship between Ben and Ibou provides a layer of cultural depth that feels integral to the story rather than superficial. However, the film lacks explicit representation of queer identities or specific disability portrayals. While it avoids certain heteronormative tropes, it does not actively lean into diverse identity-based narratives.
