Garbage is a transgressive work that successfully challenges traditional social and gender hierarchies. By focusing on South Asian identities and non-traditional sexualities, it offers a localized critique of morality that feels both intentional and subversive. The film's strength lies in its refusal to follow Western-centric or patriarchal storytelling norms. It gives its characters, especially women, significant control over their sexuality and decisions, challenging conventional social scripts. However, the exploration of vulnerability is mainly focused on psychological trauma. The film lacks meaningful representation of physical or neurodivergent disabilities, limiting its inclusivity.
