Wash Westmoreland’s documentary provides a deep look at the intersection of personal identity and systemic social structures. By focusing on the Log Cabin Republican Club, the film avoids common clichés and presents queer individuals as active participants in political negotiations rather than tragic figures. The film’s strength lies in its ability to frame personal identity as a political issue. It effectively challenges the idea that queer identity must be in opposition to institutional participation, offering a nuanced critique of established political norms. However, the film’s scope is narrow. It primarily focuses on a specific political subset, which limits its exploration of racial diversity and the representation of gender roles.

Official Synopsis
In 2004, Log Cabin -- the Gay Republican Club -- was put to the test. President Bush's unequivocal opposition to gay marriage presented them with a stark choice, whether to be good Republicans and support the President, or stand up for their civil rights as gay Americans. This decision afforded them a historic opportunity to affect the election but it also opened schisms that threatened the unity of the Log Cabin itself. In GAY REPUBLICANS politics get personal as the Log Cabin wrestle with an issue that goes to the core of their identity
