Rocks is a socially realistic film that challenges traditional storytelling methods. It stands out by emphasizing Black female empowerment and offering a detailed look at identity-driven survival. The film’s key strengths include its authentic portrayal of race and gender. By using community-driven casting and non-professional actors, it achieves cultural authenticity without falling into including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth. However, the film does not address LGBTQ+ identities or disabilities explicitly. While it focuses on socioeconomic survival, these specific aspects of identity are not explored in depth.

The film criticizes systemic issues by showing state institutions as threats to family unity. It portrays teenage behavior as a practical response to unstable living conditions and economic hardship.
