Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film lacks discernible LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. It operates within a traditional framework of personal loss and supernatural survival without queer identity markers.
Gender Representation
Kate Bowman provides intellectual agency as a social worker investigating systemic death patterns. However, the narrative remains tethered to traditional 'distressed survivor' tropes.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The cast does not prioritize intersectional or non-Anglo-Saxon demographics. The story focuses on the Bowman family through a more homogeneous, traditional casting model.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
While exploring ancient evil and metaphysical concerns, the film does not deconstruct Western institutions. It uses the family unit as the primary site of vulnerability.
Disability Representation
Sleep paralysis serves as a central plot device for horror. This framing uses neurological distress as a catalyst for terror rather than exploring lived disability agency.

AI Analysis
Dead Awake is a conventional horror thriller that prioritizes genre tropes over social disruption. While the female lead possesses professional agency, the film lacks intentionality in challenging established cinematic norms regarding identity. The narrative focuses heavily on familial vulnerability and individual survival. This narrow scope results in a lack of diverse representation across racial, cultural, and LGBTQ+ spectrums. Ultimately, the film functions as a standard supernatural piece. It utilizes physiological phenomena like sleep paralysis to drive terror rather than providing nuanced explorations of neurodivergence or systemic critique.
