Keep On Keepin' On succeeds as a sophisticated character study that avoids common documentary clichés. It excels by treating disability with dignity and centering Black musical ability to act through the mentorship of Clark Terry. The film's strength lies in its humanistic approach to identity. It explores the psychological complexities of aging and the sensory experience of a blind musician. However, the narrative remains somewhat narrow. The focus on male-to-male interpersonal connections limits its engagement with broader social diversities.
Category Breakdown
The film does not feature prominent LGBTQ+ characters or narratives, staying within traditional social frameworks.
The documentary explores masculinity through vulnerability, deconstructing the invincible male artist archetype. However, the central dynamic remains focused on male-to-male connections.
By centering Black jazz legend Clark Terry, the film provides meaningful representation. It avoids including someone from a minority group without giving them real depth, treating Terry as a driving force of wisdom and ability to act within the narrative.
The film focuses on internal artistic struggles rather than religious structures. It offers a deconstructive view of the American Dream, prioritizing intrinsic musical value over commercial success.
Justin Kauflin’s blindness is portrayed as a fundamental part of his identity rather than a tragedy. The film grants him ability to act, showing his sensory relationship with music as a sophisticated tool.
