New Showbiz Analysis

Macross Delta: Passionate Walküre excels in its gender dynamics, elevating female characters from mere icons to essential military and emotional assets. This subversion of the male-dominated sci-fi genre provides a strong foundation for ability to act and skill-based representation. However, the film remains tethered to genre conventions regarding other identities. The lack of explicit LGBTQ+ narratives and the homogeneous visual approach to race prevent a more progressive score. While the setting implies a vast, diverse galaxy, the characterization stays within traditional bounds. Ultimately, the film is a balanced work that excels in gendered power shifts but misses opportunities for deeper exploration of race, disability, and queer identity.

Official Synopsis

Macross Delta is set in the year 2067, eight years after the events of Macross Frontier. The story focuses on Walküre, a team of talented idols and the Delta Squadron, a team of experienced Valkyrie pilots as they battle against the Var Syndrome, a mysterious phenomena that is consuming the galaxy, alongside the mysterious Aerial Knights Valkyrie fighter team of the Kingdom of Wind.
