Misconceptions succeeds by placing a multi-ethnic, LGBTQ+ family unit at the heart of a traditionally conservative landscape. This intentional disruption of social hierarchies allows the film to explore complex identities through the lens of a surrogate pregnancy. The film uses cultural friction as its primary engine, specifically through the tension between a religious Southern woman and a diverse urban couple. This setup provides a platform to challenge established norms regarding family formation and moral authority. While the film excels in racial and LGBTQ+ representation, the gender dynamics suggest a more complicated struggle for female autonomy. The tension between spiritual directive and interpersonal micro-management highlights the difficulty of maintaining autonomy in high-stakes social situations.
