Life Off Grid primarily serves as a sociological exploration of autonomy and infrastructure. It profiles 200 individuals across Canada to examine life without access to electric or natural gas grids. The film offers a detailed look at alternative ways of living that diverge from modern societal norms. It operates as an ethnographic study of lifestyle choices rather than a critique of systemic power structures. However, the documentary lacks depth in addressing identity-related narratives. It focuses on the technicalities of self-sufficiency rather than the specific social identities of its subjects.
Category Breakdown
The film does not explicitly address LGBTQ+ identities or non-straight relationships. It focuses more on the day-to-day lives of its subjects rather than their sexual orientations or gender identities.
The narrative emphasizes the practical aspects of off-grid living. Participants are described in relation to their roles in infrastructure rather than through gendered power structures.
Covering a wide range of regions in Canada, the film likely includes diverse populations. However, the specific racial makeup of the 200 subjects is not clearly stated.
The documentary questions Western consumerist norms by showcasing lifestyles independent of mainstream infrastructure. It highlights decentralized living and the rejection of centralized utilities.
There is no mention of individuals with physical or neurodivergent disabilities in the film.

Official Synopsis
Off-grid is not a state of mind. It is not about being out of touch, living in a remote place, or turning off your mobile phone. Off-grid simply means living without a connection to the electric and natural gas infrastructure. From 2011 to 2013 Jonathan Taggart (Director) and Phillip Vannini (Producer) spent two years travelling across Canada to find 200 off-gridders and visit them in their homes. -
