Synopsis

Legend has told of an immense treasure of gold hidden on Corregidor Island, Philippines, buried there by the Japanese during WWII. A new clue to its location is discovered, sending two different teams on illegal digs. Terra Green assembles a professional team of specialists while a separate team led by sisters Riley and Bibi Cross use their father's 40 years of research to hunt after his untimely death. On different sides of the island, both teams believe they have found the point where X marks the spot on the map, but their illegal digs have put them all in danger from a variety of enemies, all whom covet the treasure.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.1/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any evidence of non-cisnormative identities or same-sex intimacy. The narrative focus remains strictly on the competitive treasure hunt and familial legacy.

Gender Representation

Fair

Female agency is present through the Cross sisters, who drive the plot using their father's research. However, it is unclear if they subvert traditional action archetypes.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The Philippine setting and WWII context suggest potential for diverse casting. However, the specific racial composition of the professional teams remains unconfirmed.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story follows a standard quest-based structure centered on the pursuit of gold. There is no evidence of themes that challenge traditional capitalist or Western adventure tropes.

Disability Representation

Minimal

No characters with visible or invisible disabilities are identified in the narrative documentation.

Strengths

  • The inclusion of the Cross sisters provides a foundation of female agency within the action genre.
  • The Philippine setting offers a natural opportunity for diverse geographic and ethnic representation.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative lacks visible representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative characters.
  • There is no evidence of characters with disabilities, limiting the scope of inclusive storytelling.
  • The plot relies on traditional adventure tropes that may not challenge systemic social hierarchies.

AI Analysis

Treasure Hunters operates within a traditional adventure-action framework, prioritizing physical prowess and individualist pursuits. While the film introduces female protagonists in the Cross sisters, the narrative structure appears to follow established genre tropes rather than actively subverting social hierarchies. The setting on Corregidor Island offers significant potential for geographic and ethnic diversity, yet the specific makeup of the competing teams is not explicitly detailed. This creates a gap between the film's environmental potential and its verified character depth. Ultimately, the film presents as a conventional quest story. It utilizes baseline inclusion through its female leads and international setting but lacks evidence of intentional, progressive representation across other social dimensions.
