Detective Chinatown 1900 stands as a period piece that dismantles systemic oppression. Set in 1900 San Francisco, the film reframes the narrative around the struggles of Chinese immigrants and Native Americans, avoiding a conventional Western-centric viewpoint. The murder mystery format is used to expose the era's xenophobia and the political machinations behind the Chinese Exclusion Act, shifting the focus from crime-solving to a critique of institutional corruption and historical erasure. While the film excels in depicting racial and cultural complexities, it falls short in exploring gender and LGBTQ+ identities, with male characters holding the majority of the narrative ability to act.
