The film updates the pirate genre by introducing a highly capable female scientist, providing a modern counterpoint to the traditional masculine dominance of the franchise. However, it leans heavily on conventional storytelling methods, maintaining a focus on heterosexual relationships and standard blockbuster casting. The film fails to challenge broader systemic or ideological frameworks, ultimately functioning as a traditional adventure with updated competencies.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on heterosexual relationships and does not include non-binary or LGBTQ+ identities or same-sex intimacy in the main storylines.
Carina Smyth stands out as a brilliant scientist who challenges the traditional damsel in distress stereotype by demonstrating her intellectual capabilities alongside the male protagonists.
The cast includes a mix of diverse backgrounds reflecting the Caribbean's multicultural heritage. However, the story primarily centers around a core group that fits typical blockbuster casting standards.
The storyline follows classic adventure themes, focusing on personal conflicts and mythical treasures without questioning traditional Western institutions or systemic power structures.
The film does not feature any characters with visible or invisible disabilities. Instead, it portrays idealized archetypes of physical strength and agility.
