Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The story focuses on biological sibling bonds and familial lineage. There is a lack of prominent LGBTQ+ characters or explorations of non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

A sibling duo provides a balanced platform for male and female characters. The female protagonist maintains equal agency in the adventure, avoiding submissive tropes.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The film excels by centering Native Hawaiian and Polynesian characters. It avoids the 'tourist gaze' by using a predominantly local cast to drive the narrative.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The plot reframes treasure as a connection to heritage and 'ohana' rather than a mere commodity. It engages with themes of indigenous roots and local history.

Disability Representation

Fair

Characters are portrayed through the lens of physical adventure. There is no evidence of neurodivergence or physical disabilities driving the central character arcs.

Strengths

  • Authentic centering of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian characters and perspectives.
  • Subversion of the 'tourist gaze' through a predominantly local cast.
  • Meaningful focus on cultural reclamation and ancestral history over material wealth.
  • Balanced gender dynamics that grant female protagonists equal agency.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of prominent LGBTQ+ characters or queer-coded narrative agency.
  • Minimal representation of neurodivergent or physically disabled characters.
  • Reliance on a traditional heteronormative family structure.

AI Analysis

Finding ʻOhana succeeds as a culturally grounded adventure that subverts the typical Hollywood trope of outsiders discovering a 'mystical' culture. By centering Native Hawaiian identity and genealogy, the film moves beyond using its setting as a mere backdrop, making heritage the true driver of the plot. However, the film remains anchored in a traditional, heteronormative family structure. While the sibling partnership offers gender balance, the narrative lacks significant representation for LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities, keeping the overall score in a moderate range.
