Synopsis

A surreal and disturbing distillation of Western Civilization, Necropolis is the unhinged vision of Italian director Franco Brocani. Pierre Clémenti is Attila the Hun, naked and on horseback, while Warhol superstar Viva is a drunken and abusive Countess Bathory. A pop pastiche for the psychedelic generation, Necropolis features a soundtrack by Gavin Bryars.

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.8/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit depictions of non-cisnormative identities or same-sex intimacy. The narrative focuses on individual archetypes rather than queer-coded subtext.

Gender Representation

Fair

Viva provides a platform for female agency by transitioning from domestic frustration to the powerful persona of the Bloody Countess. This arc subverts traditional female passivity.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The inclusion of Attila introduces non-Western historical figures, though the depth of these portrayals remains unclear. An American tourist suggests a Western lens is present.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The film explores moral relativism and existentialism through characters like Frankenstein's monster. It favors subjective character studies over traditional religious or social structures.

Disability Representation

Minimal

While the Frankenstein archetype involves physical difference, it is unclear if this is treated with agency. No specific details regarding neurodivergence or disability are provided.

Strengths

  • Subverts traditional female passivity through Viva's transition from domesticity to historical dominance.
  • Explores complex, subjective character studies rather than adhering to singular, traditional morality.
  • Utilizes non-Western historical figures like Attila to diversify the narrative scope.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative characters.
  • Fails to provide sufficient detail regarding the ethnic composition or intersectional depth of its cast.
  • Does not clarify if physical difference in the Frankenstein archetype is treated with genuine agency.

AI Analysis

Necropolis operates as a fragmented tapestry of genre archetypes, prioritizing stylistic exploration over systemic representation. It succeeds in subverting domestic tropes through its female characters but lacks intersectional depth. The film's strength lies in its departure from traditional morality, using historical and mythological vignettes to explore individualistic existentialism. However, the narrative remains largely centered on established Western archetypes. Ultimately, the work functions more as a series of character studies than a deliberate effort toward progressive diversity, resulting in a score that reflects its episodic and genre-driven nature.
