Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.3/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. It focuses on a solitary protagonist, leaving no space to explore queer identities or non-heteronormative experiences.

Gender Representation

Fair

A significant imbalance in agency exists, as the narrative centers on a male protagonist's internal monologue. Female presence is framed through a male gaze, appearing as a recurring, perhaps hallucinatory image.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Set in Sofia, Bulgaria, the film reflects a homogeneous social environment. It lacks diverse casting or non-white protagonists to challenge broader cultural norms.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The film achieves moderate marks by embracing perceptual relativism and questioning objective truth. However, it lacks a direct critique of Western institutions or systemic ideologies.

Disability Representation

Limited

Themes of mental instability and blurred reality are used as narrative devices. The film avoids 'inspiration porn' but fails to provide meaningful representation of disability agency.

Strengths

  • Successfully disrupts traditional narrative structures through a postmodern approach.
  • Offers a deep, meditative exploration of the subjective nature of reality.
  • Avoids 'inspiration porn' when depicting psychological distress.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks agency for female characters, who are often framed through a male gaze.
  • Fails to provide meaningful representation of disability or neurodivergence.
  • Maintains a homogeneous social environment with little racial or ethnic diversity.

AI Analysis

Walking on Water is a specialized work of psychological postmodernism that prioritizes the subjectivity of truth over demographic breadth. Its fragmented structure successfully disrupts traditional documentary expectations, offering a deep dive into the internal psychological state of its protagonist. However, the film's focus on a singular, isolated male perspective limits its intersectional impact. By centering the narrative on one man's perception, the work misses opportunities to engage with diverse identities or systemic social critiques. Ultimately, while the film excels as a meditative study of human perception, it lacks the intentionality required to drive progressive representation across key demographic categories.
