Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

6.2/10

Good

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. While it explores themes of secrecy and hidden lives, these are tied to social and legal pressures rather than queer identity.

Gender Representation

Good

Female protagonists demonstrate high agency while managing a high-stakes crisis. The narrative subverts patriarchal hierarchies through female solidarity and strategic intellect rather than portraying women as passive victims.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The cast is non-Western and non-Anglo-Saxon, providing a perspective removed from Hollywood hegemony. The setting and casting are authentic to the specific cultural textures of Tehran.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

Traditional institutions like family and religion are framed as obstacles to be navigated. The film prioritizes individual survivalist ethics over the preservation of systemic or religious norms.

Disability Representation

Fair

Psychological distress and self-harm serve as plot catalysts rather than nuanced explorations of neurodivergence. The focus remains on the situational crisis instead of lived experiences of disability.

Strengths

  • Strong portrayal of female agency and solidarity between the protagonists.
  • Authentic, non-Western perspective rooted in the specific cultural textures of Tehran.
  • Effective subversion of traditional patriarchal and institutional hierarchies.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of explicit representation for LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Mental health and psychological distress lack nuanced, lived-experience exploration.
  • Limited focus on neurodivergence or chronic disability.

AI Analysis

Until Tomorrow succeeds as a sophisticated study of individual autonomy against systemic pressure. It excels by centering female agency and offering a non-Western perspective that avoids Hollywood archetypes. The film's strength lies in its subversion of traditional social hierarchies. By framing family and religious institutions as sources of surveillance, it creates a compelling critique of institutionalized morality. However, the narrative lacks depth in specific representation categories. There is no overt LGBTQ+ presence, and mental health elements function more as plot devices than nuanced character studies.
