Empire operates primarily as a genre-driven crime drama. While the central conflict between drug dealing and Wall Street finance offers a window into socioeconomic and racial tensions, the film relies heavily on conventional clichés. Character roles are largely restricted to a male-dominated hierarchy, leaving little room for diverse gender or LGBTQ+ perspectives. The narrative prioritizes a standard revenge arc over a nuanced deconstruction of social or institutional structures. Ultimately, the film functions as a character study of criminal ambition rather than a vehicle for storytelling that reflects multiple aspects of identity or the disruption of traditional social hierarchies.
