Illegal Business operates primarily within traditional crime and thriller genres, focusing on the high-stakes conflict between a protagonist and the law. While it lacks diverse representation, it provides a culturally significant departure from Anglo-centric storytelling. The film's strength lies in its departure from Hollywood conventions by centering Spanish-speaking characters. However, the narrative remains heavily male-centric, revolving around masculine power struggles and criminal hierarchies. Ultimately, the film challenges the monolithic nature of English-language crime dramas, even if it adheres to standard genre archetypes.
