Synopsis

Francisco, behave! I Know it's your birthday, you are thirty now, it's carnival, you've dressed as a cowboy for the school party and you are surrounded by kids you hate. But that's no reason to be so annoying... Francisco, repeat after me: "Up to your 30s you have the face God has given you. After that, you get the face you deserve".

The film lacks explicit confirmation of LGBTQ+ characters or non-heteronormative identities. However, the surrealist genre and director's style suggest a narrative space where traditional norms might be destabilized.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story centers on a male protagonist, Francisco, who experiences social regression and vulnerability. This approach deconstructs traditional masculine competence and the trope of the authoritative male figure.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

There is no evidence of a multi-ethnic cast or intentional race-bent casting. The narrative focus remains strictly on the individual psychological and social experiences of the protagonist.

Good

The film critiques social conformity through a shift from divine order to a karmic system. The Carnival setting and themes of meritocracy suggest a deconstruction of traditional social structures.

  • Provides no clear representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-heteronormative characters.
  • Does not feature characters representing physical or neurodivergent disabilities.

AI Analysis

Miguel Gomes uses a surrealist, fantasy-driven framework to explore the friction between individual identity and social expectations. By placing a thirty-year-old man in a regressive, school-like social context, the film subverts traditional developmental milestones and adult hierarchies. The work prioritizes a critique of social structures and moral relativism over diverse casting. While it lacks explicit intersectional representation, it succeeds in challenging conventional cinematic norms and traditional masculine archetypes through its unique narrative architecture.
