Philip Ridley’s *Heartless* is a surrealist deconstruction of urban isolation that centers on a protagonist defined by physical difference. By focusing on underrepresented individuals, the film disrupts conventional heroic archetypes and explores fragmented identities. The film excels in its thematic depth, particularly regarding disability and cultural critique. It uses Jamie's facial birthmark to examine visibility rather than offering a miraculous cure, and it effectively challenges traditional Western moral hierarchies. However, the film's nihilistic tone occasionally hampers the development of women's ability to drive the story. While it successfully challenges traditional gender roles, the chaotic nature of the character arcs can leave some dynamics feeling aimless.
