Citadel is a localized psychological horror that focuses on individual trauma rather than broader social issues. The narrative relies heavily on traditional genre clichés, such as the protective father and the haunted survivor, limiting its engagement with diverse social frameworks. The film's strength lies in its character-driven tension and its use of mental health to shape the atmosphere. However, the reliance on conventional relational structures and a homogeneous setting results in a narrow social scope. Ultimately, the work functions as a study of personal grief rather than a tool for disrupting social hierarchies or identity politics.
Category Breakdown
There are no queer narratives or non-cisgender identities in the plot. The story centers on a heterosexual relationship and domestic tragedy.
The film portrays a patriarchal crisis where the male protagonist is the main driver of the story. Female characters are often portrayed as vulnerable or absent.
Set in Dublin, the film features a homogeneous social environment with no multi-ethnic cast or significant racial diversity.
The narrative focuses on individual grief and urban decay without critiquing social hierarchies or religious institutions.
Agoraphobia is central to the protagonist's experience and shapes the viewer's perception. However, it leans into the cliché of the suffering protagonist.
