Synopsis

Having suffered a tragedy, Ben becomes a caregiver to earn money. His first client, Trevor, is a hilarious 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor hit the road on a trip into the western states. The folks they collect along the way will help them test their skills for surviving outside their calculated existence. Together, they come to understand the importance of hope and the necessity of true friendship.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.3/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film focuses on heteronormative romantic subplots and platonic male bonding. It avoids harmful stereotypes but does not provide visibility for queer perspectives or challenge heteronormative structures.

Gender Representation

Fair

The narrative arc is driven by male-centric mentorship and friendship. While supporting female characters allow the film to pass the Bechdel test, it maintains conventional gender dynamics.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The cast leans toward a relatively homogeneous demographic typical of American road-trip dramas. It lacks a multi-ethnic ensemble to reflect a non-Anglo-Saxon majority.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story subtly challenges the rigidity of caretaking institutions by prioritizing emotional autonomy. However, it operates within a standard modern socioeconomic framework without systemic critique.

Disability Representation

Excellent

The film excels by centering Trevor, a character with muscular dystrophy, as an agent of his own story. It avoids pity, focusing instead on his wit and autonomy.

Strengths

  • Provides a grounded, nuanced portrayal of muscular dystrophy through a character with significant agency.
  • Avoids 'inspiration porn' by focusing on the protagonist's wit and desire for autonomy.
  • Offers a sophisticated look at the complexities of the caregiver and client relationship.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks diverse, multi-ethnic representation within the ensemble cast.
  • Does not provide visibility for LGBTQ+ perspectives or challenge heteronormative structures.
  • Relies on conventional gender dynamics and a male-centric narrative arc.

AI Analysis

The film is a standout character study primarily due to its respectful and nuanced portrayal of physical disability. By giving Trevor agency and a distinct personality, the narrative avoids the reductive tropes often found in cinema regarding chronic conditions. However, the film remains within the bounds of traditional storytelling. It lacks significant intersectional depth, as the racial and LGBTQ+ elements are minimal or absent, and the gender dynamics follow a standard, male-led trajectory. Ultimately, while it doesn't seek to deconstruct social systems, its commitment to portraying a lived experience of disability with dignity makes it a meaningful, if somewhat conventional, drama.
